Woodcliff Lake Restraining Orders

Some of the cases that occur in Woodcliff Lake involve domestic violence. These cases may entail multiple components, which means the defendant may be charged with a criminal offense like assault and also issued a temporary restraining order. The assault case, if the charges are for simple assault, will be handled in the Pascack Joint Municipal Court. On the other hand, the restraining order will be handled in the Family Division of the Superior Court in Bergen County. New Jersey law allows for the commencement of domestic abuse matters by the police and the alleged victims. Thus, a person may accuse someone else of domestic violence in the form of assault and file a criminal complaint as well as a temporary protection order. The accused must then answer to the allegations through numerous court appearances that follow. Beyond the inconvenience of court hearings, you may be impacted by the criminal penalties of a conviction and the permanent effects if a restraining order is made permanent.

For example, a simple assault charge could result in jail time, while an FRO requires you to forego ownership or possession of weapons for the rest of your life. You will also have a criminal conviction on your record and be added to the Domestic Violence Registry. With manifold consequences hanging over your head, it is vital to seek help from an experienced criminal and domestic violence defense lawyer. The team at The Tormey Law Firm are here to fight for your liberties and will work tirelessly to clear your name.
