Police Trying to Identify Vandals Who Knocked over Tombstones at Wyckoff Cemetery

Police in Wyckoff NJ are on the lookout for the suspects who allegedly vandalized a local cemetery.

The suspects allegedly struck late at night and toppled headstones at the Wyckoff Reformed Cemetery in Wyckoff, New Jersey. The cemetery is located next to the Wyckoff Reformed Church on Wyckoff Avenue. According to law enforcement, the vandals went row by row and knocked over roughly 50 headstones. Cemetery employees didn’t notice the property damage until the next morning when they showed up for work. The workers then contacted the Wyckoff Police Department and reported the vandalism.

The cemetery is a historic site that has stood in Wyckoff for more than one hundred years. According to authorities, some of the toppled gravestones date all the way back to the early 1800s.

Wyckoff NJ detectives are investigating the vandalism, but they have yet to identify any suspects. Any members of the public with information about the vandalism should call Wyckoff investigators at 201-891-2121.

If police are eventually able to identify and locate the suspects, it is possible that the vandals would be charged with criminal mischief and face severe penalties. That’s because N.J.S.A. 2C:17-3 typically classifies criminal mischief as a fourth degree crime. A conviction on fourth degree criminal mischief charges could lead to a sentence of 3-5 years in NJ State Prison.
