Police Arrest Rutherford Man Accused of Sexual Assault of 7-Year-Old Girl in Cliffside Park, New Jersey
Police in Cliffside Park New Jersey arrested a Rutherford NJ man accused of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl.
According to prosecutors, the 55-year-old suspect engaged in sexual activity with the young victim.
When the victim’s father learned about the alleged sexual abuse, he called the Cliffside Park Police Department. Cliffside Park NJ police then alerted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, which immediately began to investigate the allegations.
Bergen County detectives spoke with the victim and got enough details about the alleged sexual activity to place the suspect under arrest.
Although information about the alleged crime is sparse at this time, Bergen County NJ prosecutors stated that the suspect knew the victim in the case.
The suspect was charged with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
If the suspect is ultimately convicted of sexual assault, he would be subject to significant penalties. That’s because N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2 classifies an act of sexual penetration with a minor under 13 years of age as a first degree felony. In fact, it’s technically classified as aggravated sexual assault, which is an elevated charge of sexual assault. This means that the suspect would face up to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison.
Sometime after being placed under arrest, the suspect was taken to the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, NJ. He later posted a $100,000 bail amount and was released from jail.
While the suspect remains free on bail, he is not to have any contact whatsoever with the victim in the case.
